Mobile Link Bridge

In 2001 we were awarded a contract by the Port of Singapore (PSA) to design and build a mobile gangway similar to the aerobridges used at the airport terminals. The requirement of this gangway is that it must be able to dock to any type of cruise ships that call at their port from their seven (7) metre high elevated cruise terminal.

Besides having self-elevating steps, the mobile gangway must be able to lower itself to3 m above wharf deck level and raise itself up to 12 m. It must be able to telescope to a distance of 3.6 m, be able to travel along a 100-m long rail track at a speed of 0.5 m/s and able to sense the movement of the ship that is docked to it. Should the ship drift in and out, surge left and right and/or raise up and down due to tidal changes, the sensors on the mobile gangway will pick up all the signals and warn the operator when the parameters are reached.

Four months upon award of the contract, the mobile gangway was delivered and installed at the PSA cruise terminal.

The design of the mobile gangway incorporates all safety factors that can be envisaged. Besides the sensors to to monitor drifting, surging and tidal changes, anti-collision sonic sensors are also installed to prevent the gangway from colliding into anything placed on the wharf deck.

Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTV) are also incorporated for the operator to monitor human movements both on the wharf deck as well as boarding and disembarkation from the ship.

Besides a main control panel at the building end, a remote control pendant is also mounted at the ship end to help control all hydraulic function of the mobile gangway. This function is useful as it enables the operator to control the mobile gangway from the ship end to ensure a safe and accurate docking when precision is called for.
